Baruch College History
Baruch College History:

The presence of Baruch College at 23rd Street and Lexington Avenue is part the history of over 150 years of public higher education at this location that includes the New York Free Academy and City College. The Free Academy was founded on 23rd Street in 1849 as New York’s first public institution of higher learning; it was renamed the College of the City of New York (CCNY) in 1866. City College moved to its current St. Nicholas Heights campus in 1907, leaving 23rd Street to become home of the School of Business and eventually Baruch College.
