New York Draft Riot - cont.

A report of these attacks stated:

About 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a mob suddenly pounced upon several families of colored people, residing in the rear of no. 147 East Twenty-eighth Street, beating every one upon whom they could lay their hands in a brutal manner. A man named Van Clear was beaten over the head with a crowbar and left for dead in the street. Thence they entered Broadway Alley, and killed a man named Alfred Dudley. All the furniture found in the houses was smashed, and the building fired. The rioters were finally dispersed by the police and military.
Black residents of Second Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets were also attacked. A telegram to police headquarters reported: "The mob have captured some five or six Negroes, and are preparing to hang them; be quick with reinforcements."

In the evening, militia troops on Third Avenue captured Martin Moran, considered a leader of the rioting. He was nearly hung on the spot after being accused of directing snipers to pick off militia officers.
