BUILDING FRAGMENTS

Medallion with Ribboned Bay Leaf Garland

The bays at each end of the façade are emphasized by a low attic story above the entablature, which is vertically articulated as a pedestal and horizontally articulated with projections continuing visually the lines of façade elements below. The surface of this story has, from the bottom, a fillet, a narrow fascia beginning with a congé, a dado with a broad projecting band in the center, a fillet, an ovolo, a fillet, a fascia ending in a congé, and a fillet. There is a low blocking course above. Ornament projecting from the substrate consists of a tall oval disk bordered by a slightly recessed oval fascia with large bay leaf swags draped around the ovals from the top. At the top, is the ribbon.

A Banded Bay Leaf Garland is an ornament applied to broad convex moldings, sometimes half round but here only slightly convex, formed of rows of bay leaves (also called laurel leaves), often as here with bay berries, wrapped with crossing bands or ribbons.
