BUILDING FRAGMENTS

Ionic Order of Architecture

The Ionic Order, developed in ancient Greece, is characterized by a capital with scrolled elements called "volutes." The order has two principal parts, the column, which supports, and the entablature, which is supported. At the Fiss, Doerr & Carroll building, the order rested on a plinth, which, in turn, rested atop a pedestal.
