Lexington Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets, 1924
Following the assassination of President James Garfield, Vice President Chester
A. Arthur was inaugurated President of the United States on September 20, 1881,
in his home at 123 Lexington Avenue (third building from the right). Although
altered, this row house still stands and is a National Historic Landmark. After
failing to win the Republican nomination to run for a second term, Arthur returned
to New York where he died in 1886.
