Bull’s Head Tavern, 24th Street and Third Avenue, 1830
Constructed in 1827, the Bull’s Head Tavern stood at the center of the East
24th Street cattle market. It was here that cattle drovers bargained with New
York butchers and deals were made for the sale of livestock. Drovers stayed
at the tavern until their stock was sold. After the cattle market moved uptown
in 1846 and 24th Street became a horse market, the tavern lost its place of
importance and was renamed a “hotel” in hopes of attracting a different class
of clientele.
