East 24th Street prior to Demolition, 1996
The building pictured here stood on East 24th Street between Third and Lexington
Avenues. It was constructed in c.1885-1890 as a stable operated by Fleischman
and Company, one of many businesses that were part of the Bull’s Head Market.
In the 1890s, the Fiss, Doerr and Carroll Horse Company came to dominate the
East 24th Street horse market, and purchased several stables on the block, including
this stable. With the decline of the horse trade, Fiss, Doerr and Carroll went
out of business in the late 1920s, and this and other stables on the block were
converted to automobile garages.
