Street Vendors on East 29th Street between Second and
Third Avenues, 1930
Over the course of a decade, the part of the East Side of Manhattan that included
Rose Hill and Kips Bay lost 32 percent of its population. This rapid decline
was part of a long-term decrease in population that was the result of a decrease
in immigration, the presence of fewer manufacturing jobs, and the movement of
people to other parts of New York and the suburbs.
