Empire Stone Dressing Company, 29th Street and the
East River, 1851
Being beyond much of the developed city in the early nineteenth century, the
former Rose Hill and Kip farms became the location of industrial development.
The Empire Stone Dressing Company operated a large facility between 28th and
29th Streets on the East River. The Empire Iron Works had a large factory along
the river at 25th Street, and the Union Steam Works stood at 22nd Street and
Second Avenue. Piers were constructed along the East River for ships that carried
freight to and from these industries.
