Chapel in City College, 1905
From 1847 to 1848, the Free Academy building was constructed at the southeast
corner of Lexington Avenue and 23rd Street according the designs of architect
James Renwick, who would later design St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The building
included eighteen classrooms and a main assembly hall referred to as the “chapel”.
The building was largely abandoned after City College moved from here to its
present campus in 1907. The Free Academy building was used again in 1919 to
house the new CCNY School of Business and Civic Administration.
