Demolition of Buildings on East 24th Street, 1996
Construction of the Baruch Academic Complex necessitated the demolition of
ten buildings on this block in 1996. Prior to demolition, two of the buildings
were identified as historic structures and a controversy ensued over whether
they should be preserved. In the end, the buildings were torn down with the
others on the block. In place of preserving the structures, this exhibit on
the history of the buildings and surrounding neighborhood was installed in
2004.
