Illustration of the Bull’s Head Market, 1869
This illustration appeared in an 1879 edition of the magazine
Harper’s Weekly.
The Bull’s Head Market was established on East 24th Street in 1826 as the main
cattle market for New York and changed to a horse market in 1846. The illustration
depicts the era of the horse market when straw, oats, and manure littered the
surface of 24th Street, where horses pulled wagons to demonstrate their strength
to buyers.
