East 24th Street prior to demolition, 1996
In 1906, the Fiss, Doerr and Carroll Horse Company constructed an ornate auction
mart that consisted of a large, open interior with an arena at ground level
and a second floor gallery from which buyers could view horse auctions. With
advent of the automobile in the early twentieth century, the use of horses
in New York began to decline and this building quickly became unnecessary.
In 1922, the auction mart was sold and converted into a full-service garage
for automobiles. The Fiss, Doerr and Carroll Horse Company went out of business
soon after. The auction mart continued to be used as a garage until shortly
before it was demolished in 1996 to clear the site for the Baruch Academic
Complex.
